The Ohio GM plant that manufacturers the Chevy Cobalt, as well as the new Chevy Cruze compact, has 2,250 employees coming back on the job! I would say this is a good sign that the CARS program (cash for Clunkers) is working just fine.
The Chevy Cobalt plant in Northeast Ohio had been closed down for nine weeks, but workers started coming back on Monday, August 3, and all 2,250 workers are expected back on the job by Wednesday. The Ohio plant is actually pinning their future job security hopes on the sleeker and lighter Chevy Cruze compact car. Production of the Cruze will be added early in 2010.
In fact, the union is hoping the Cruze, as well as the demand created by the Cash for Clunkers program will ultimately lead to an additional production shift being added in the new year. A GM spokesman says the Cruze will play an important role in the company’s future as gasoline prices continue to increase.
In the meantime, it will be back to business as usual at the Ohio plant, producing the popular Chevy Cobalt.
